I think BMW started this in the early 90's with their wacky 20-pin underhood connector for service interval resets! They could at least give us a way to acknowledge the message once and then just put a discrete wrench light reminder in the cluster, but NO they want their $$$$.
BMW X3 service brakes consist of hydraulic brake calipers and rotors, one at each wheel. When the brake pedal is pressed, brake fluid is forced out of the brake master cylinder and through the brake lines to each brake caliper. Pistons in the calipers push out and clamp brake pads against the brake rotors (or discs), thus slowing down the vehicle.
This was performed on a 2017 330xi with the M-sport package but the repair will be similar for all F30 BMWs.
